Area: 1,000 km2 (400 sq mi)
Density: 8,100/km2 (3,100 per sq mi)
2017 GDP: 2.0 trillion yuan (300 billion USD)
Per capita per month: 10,700 yuan (1,600 USD)
Chongqing is famous for its fog and mountains, and the Yangtze River cruise. It’s the largest of China’s four municipalities besides Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, though by contrast its population is mostly rural. Huge infrastructure and industrial investment has made it one of China’s 10 largest cities in the last 5 years.

Chongqing is Mainland China’s most densely populated city. Chongqing Municipality’s main city is sucking in its 30-million+ provincial population into an area constricted by mountains and the Yangtze River — so high-rise dominates. (Hong Kong has a greater population density, over twice Chongqing’s, once again forced up my mountainous geography and water.)
