question

I wonder when I should use words such as proportion, percentage, number, amount, level ... in the plural form. For example:

The percentages/percentage of boys in 6-11 and 12-16 age groups participating in basketball were/was 89% and 78% respectively.

The proportion/proportions of Vietnamese people living under the line was/were 20% and 5% in 1980 and 2010 respectively.

The number/numbers of grades 9 and 10 are 200 and 300 respectively.

The amount/amounts of beef and fish used was/were 10 grams and 20 grams respectively.

Please help me understand the mechanism of this one. Thank you!

Answer:

the amount for uncountable. it depends on the writing question.

Use cross product to determine if the two ratios form a proportion. Here we can see that 2/16 and 5/40 are proportions since their cross products are equal.Percent means hundredths or per hundred and is written with the symbol, %. Percent is a ratio were we compare numbers to 100 which means that 1% is 1/100.
