The recent freeze debates and hacks expose real concentration in the Bitcoin ecosystem—custodians, stablecoin issuers, sidechain operators, hardware supply chains, DNS providers, maintainers, funders. But exposure is not proof. What they establish is that Bitcoin’s decentralization is conditional and uneven, not that the base protocol is centrally controlled.

The $3 billion freeze was real, but it was a stablecoin-and-exchange operation. Tether and Circle can blacklist because they issue tokens; Binance can freeze because it holds custody. That says a lot about the custodial layer and little about whether the base chain can be censored. The stolen BTC that reached the open market was “likely gone” precisely because no one could freeze it. Critics see the edges as where power lives. Defenders see the core doing what it claims. Both are reading the same facts, and neither has won.

Liquid is similar. A federated sidechain was paused by its operators. That is centralization—but Liquid is explicitly a federated sidechain, not a miniature Bitcoin. The Coldcard firmware exploit is more serious because it hits self-custody’s supply chain. But hardware wallets have always been a trust tradeoff, and firmware verification, open-source audits, multisig, and air-gapping are the ecosystem’s attempted answers. Whether those answers are fast and accessible enough is an open question, not a settled indictment.

The Core maintainer point is the strongest, but it still needs care. A small set of trusted keys is a governance chokepoint. It is also how much serious open-source infrastructure works, and the ultimate check is exit: users and miners can run different code, and forks have happened. That check is costly and rarely used, which is why the concern is legitimate. But “small maintainer group” is not the same as “unaccountable central bank.” The real question is whether voice and exit are meaningful. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not. Certainty either way is a failure of imagination.

And yes, “Bitcoin people” collaborate. Collaboration is not the scandal; capture is. Funding organizations shape developer incentives, corporate foundations enter protocol funding, private conferences sort insiders from outsiders. These are real centralizing pressures. But they are also plural and competitive. MARA is not the only funder. Core is not the only implementation. Miners are not the only constituency. The system is oligarchical in practice and polycentric in rhetoric, and the truth is probably somewhere in the messy middle.

So the honest comment is this: the recent hacks and freeze debates do not prove Bitcoin is centralized. They also do not prove it is sufficiently decentralized. They prove that “decentralized” is an underspecified claim—that the answer depends on the threat model and the time horizon. Over a week, the edges look dominant. Over a decade, exit and forkability may matter more. Or they may not.

The strongest critique is not “Bitcoin is centralized.” It is “Bitcoin’s decentralization is conditional, uneven, and often asserted more confidently than it is demonstrated.” That claim survives the counterarguments. The stronger claim does not. And the same humility should apply to the defenders: the fact that the protocol has not been shut down yet is a track record, not a proof of immortality. Track records are useful. They are not guarantees.

“Don’t be so sure” is the right correction, and it applies to the critics as much as the defenders.
