ChatGPT is a commonly used chatbot model that has gained popularity. Concerns have been mentioned about the potential for ChatGPT to facilitate plagiarism. Thus, it is necessary to test whether ChatGPT can distinguish between plagiarized and non-plagiarized texts. Methods: Authors aimed to investigate the potential for ChatGPT to generate plagiarized content. The sample included various text types, such as manuscripts. We have asked several questions about plagiarism. Results: Authors found that the first version of ChatGPT (2023) cannot detect plagiarism successfully, while it can distinguish commonly written sentences from academic sources. ChatGPT assumes that the given reference for the previous article is sufficient. However, it does not mean that it is free from plagiarism. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that ChatGPT cannot fully understand plagiarism.
