AI and Psychology Interview

  • From my reading, much of your recent work ties AI to psychology. How did you realise AI’s capacity to be helpful in this field, and what made you decide to explore it?
  • In ‘Chatbots and Mental Healthcare in Psychology and Psychiatry’, you describe how there is a need to develop methods to test the creativity of ChatGPT. How would you recommend further research into other fields, such as general medicine and the arts, would be undertaken to test for this creativity?
  • If this technology continues in its trajectory, could you ever see a time when psychologists are in competition with AI? Would you recommend psychology as a stable career to teenagers today?
  • Finally, overall, do you think AI should be viewed as a threat or an opportunity to society?

Hello, thank you very much. I am delighted to respond to your inquiries. Assessing creativity can be a challenging objective in itself. Our definition of creativity may be restrictive, as demonstrated by ChatGPT revealing that human ingenuity is not as exceptional as once thought. Nevertheless, this should not suggest that AI is capable of everything, rendering our efforts unnecessary. In society, the paramount task often revolves around surpassing others. It is essential to enhance our abilities beyond those of our peers. Regarding the second query, I foresee AI bringing about substantial transformations in the field of clinical psychology. It is plausible that individuals may not require the services of clinical psychologists in the foreseeable future. Addressing the third question, I anticipate AI reshaping traditional job descriptions; nonetheless, individuals can continue conducting research within the realm of psychology. Psychology constitutes a significant aspect of our cognitive processes and the scientific domain. It can intersect with various other fields like economics, electronics, and even physics, thereby retaining its significance. Lastly, in response to the final question, the unequivocal categorization of AI as either beneficial or detrimental remains uncertain. Undoubtedly, it harbors certain benefits, and progress appears to be an inevitable outcome.
